Tensions were high today as the victim and her family were in the courtroom. One witness, Sumters ex fiancé, testified saying "He does not deserve to be out ever. He deserves to rot in jail." The victim did not speak but her written statement read in part "I tried committing suicide in may. I can't love myself although I'm trying hard to."
Sumter said he hid behind drugs his whole life instead of dealing with his own problems. He also addressed the victim and her family and apologized for ruining her life.
Sumters' ex fiancé said he wasn't on drugs when raped the victim. Sumter was sentenced to 60 years in prison with 30 suspended and a 10 year parole restriction. He must complete phase 1 and 2 of a sex offender program before he's eligible for parole.
