WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is wrangling votes for House speaker, but another leadership battle is playing out on the Republican side of the aisle.

California Rep. Kevin McCarthy burned up the phone lines Thursday shoring up support to be minority leader.

He's facing a challenge from Ohio Republican Jim Jordan, who's part of the conservative Freedom Caucus.

Republicans lost their majority in this week's midterm elections, and conservatives want changes.

Democrats won a slim majority, which leaves Pelosi little cushion to round up the 218 votes for speaker.

One newcomer will be a familiar name to the GOP leadership lineup - Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. She announced her bid for the No. 3 spot in Republican leadership.
