Don Jones elected for next Yellowstone County Commissioner of District 3, so what does this mean?

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Republican Candidate Don Jones is elected as the next Yellowstone County Commissioner of District 3 winning 57 percent of the vote against Democratic Candidate Robyn Driscoll.

The current Yellowstone County Commissioner, Robyn Driscoll, faced a tough challenger and at the end of the day, was not able to finish in the lead. With a new Yellowstone County Comissioner, what does this mean for the county?

"Three CEO's of a 114 million dollar budget," John Ostlund said.

John Ostlund is the chairman and Yellowstone County Commissioner for District 1. He makes up one of the three commissioners for Yellowstone County and explained their role.

"[We] manage all of the land divisions and in Yellowstone County," Ostlund said. "All the zone changes that come before you. We hire and fire the department heads. We set the budgets for all of the elected officials and department heads and we deal with the human rights issues and personnel issues."

Driscoll is the only Democrat among the commissioners. Now that she has to pass the torch, all commissioners will represent their districts as republicans. But does this make an impact on their future choices? Denis Pitman, Yellowstone County Comissioner of District 2, explained.

"In the last two years, Robyn has looked to John and I as we replace some Republicans or we look to her for a Democrat replacement," Pitman said. "So I think for the most part, all three of us are individuals and represent our constituents in different ways. Whether you're Republican or Democrat, I think it really lends itself to being open to listening to all sides."

Jones said the first thing he will be doing as Yellowstone County Commissioner will be to understand what the budget is, where the dollars are going, what we're getting for those dollars and evaluate. Pitman said this quality in Don Jones will be a great asset to Yellowstone County.

"It works so well because we all bring something different to the table and if he can bring more of a number crunching budget aspect- I kind of have that aspect of trying to find new ways to do things things and make things better too- so we'll all work together," Pitman said. "The three of us will probably gel very well."

Robyn Driscoll was appointed to the Yellowstone County Commissioner position after former Yellowstone County Comissioner, Bill Kennedy, stepped down to become the president of the MSU Billings Foundation.

Don Jones is a local businessman and a part of the legislature. KULR-8 spoke with both candidates who said they've kept a mutual understanding and good relationship during their race. Both Jones and Driscoll said they will continue to work together for the citizens of Yellowstone County.

"She's been a great opponent," Jones said. "She was out there working hard and I appreciate Robyn for all the things that she's done on her two years on the commission."

"My opponent was a complete gentleman and I appreciate that from him and I wish him absolutely the best of luck," Robyn said.

KULR-8 spoke to Driscoll via text messaging Wednesday. She said she will continue to work as Yellowstone County Commissioner for District 3 until her term is up on December 31st. She adds between now and then, she will look at opportunities for employment.

Ostlund said Don Jones will be sworn in late December and will take office the first of January.
