NBC News projects Gianforte wins Montana's House race

Posted: Updated:

Republican Congressman Greg Gianforte took a late lead over his Democratic challenger, Kathleen Williams, in the race for Montana’s U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday’s Election Night.

As of 11:23 pm, Rep. Gianforte had 53 percent of the vote, compared to Williams 44 percent. Shortly after that, NBC News projected Rep. Gianforte as the winner of Montana's lone seat in the House.

During this Midterm Election 2018, the Republican Party pulled out all the stops to garner votes on behalf of Congressman Gianforte.

President Trump made history over the weekend in Belgrade by being the only sitting U.S. President to visit Montana four times, all to rally on behalf of Congressman Gianforte and U.S. Senate Candidate Matt Rosendale.

On Monday, Vice President Mike Pence make his third campaign stop in Montana, also to rally for the GOP candidates.

Congressman Gianforte was running for his first full term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

It's a seat that he's held for roughly 16 months.

During that time, he has voted in-line with President Trump 93.7 percent of the time, since in office, according to FiveThirtyEight.org.

Gianforte has faced renewed criticism over his assault on Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs the day before he won a Special Congressional Election last year.

It was an incident that President Trump reiterated during a campaign rally in Missoula.

When asked by ABC FOX Montana what a Greg Gianforte win would be for Montana, Eric Jacobs, a Bozeman resident said, “Greg Gianforte is the hardest working Congressman he has seen for Montana. He is a rare individual, who flies back home to Montana every weekend. That is a real win for the people of Montana, not for the coal industry and basic economics, but to put the people in Montana better in touch with what is happening in Washington, DC.”

By the end of Tuesday night, the results showed that Gianforte’s emphasis on working hand-in-hand with President Donald Trump could win Montana's lone U.S. House seat, following a very tight race.
