Missoula pizza shop apologizes for Columbus Day post

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - A local pizza shop is apologizing for its Columbus Day post.

Howard's Pizza posted on Monday, saying: "Howard's will be closed Monday, October 8th for Columbus day to do what the Columbus's do... Go hunting!"

The post drew strong reactions from some people who interpreted the "hunting" comment to be in reference to Columbus' hunting down and killing of indigenous tribes.

"This post is very disturbing," remarked one commenter.

Howard's Pizza later took down the post and issued an apology:

"In light of our recent Columbus day post, I'd like to formally apologize for the offensiveness it caused to so many. I was completely unaware of the dark history and controversy surrounding the holiday. It was an honest mistake, and I only meant hunting in the traditional sense."

Howard's Family Pizza has operated for more than 25 years in Missoula, according to its website. It was purchased more than two years ago by Matthew and Desi Meyers, who reached out to clarify that their original post was meant to reference the last week of deer archery season.

Howard's apology post was met with supporters.

Gary writes: "I'm offended that some whining little cry babies got butt hurt because you wanted to spend time with your family."

Loralei writes: "Idk what was said but thank you for the apology and understanding that that day is a bad day for a lot of native Americans."

The city of Missoula adopted the second Monday in October as Indigenous People's Day in 2015, joining dozens of other communities that are moving away from Columbus Day celebrations.
