The breakdown on President Trump's visit to Billings

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The president's visit to the Magic City is a huge undertaking for local law enforcement and for those hosting the rally at which the president will speak.

There's a sense of haste in the air as the city prepares for the presidential visit.

The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy aircraft, a large military transport aircraft, has already landed in the Magic City.

Beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday, Police Chief Rich St. John warns many roads will be closed and you won't be able to use your vehicle unless you're staying at the DoubleTree hotel or working there.

"Foot traffic is not restricted to the biggest extent," Chief St. John said. "Obviously, there are places where people can't go."

For those attending the rally, the doors of the Rimrock Auto Arena will open at 4 p.m. and it's recommended that you get here as early as possible, as only ten thousand people will be allowed inside.

Bill Dutcher with MetraPark said the secret service will be in charge of the venue during the president's stay.

"It's interesting because no matter what else we have here, we're somewhat in charge and it's totally an awesome experience to not be in charge," Dutcher said.

Chief St. John said President Trump will land at Billings Logan International Airport at 5:30 tomorrow evening. Airport operations supervisor, Shane Ketterling, said to expect delays.

"There could be some minor delays between 5 and 6 p.m. and, as advertised, the motorcade will be traveling from the airport to the Metra and that will probably take place close to the 6 o'clock time frame," Ketterling said.

Vendors take advantage of rallies like this across the country, selling President Trump merchandise. They arrived in Billings a few days in advance so people can get their souvenirs ahead of time.

"We go all over the U.S," said one vendor.

Finally, the rally will begin at 7 p.m. President Donald Trump will be campaigning for U.S. Senate candidate Matt Rosendale.
Senator Tester said he welcomes the president to the Magic City.

"I welcome the president," Senator Tester said. "And its really an opportunity to help educate the president on some of our challenges in rural America."

On Friday, President Trump leaves the Magic City and Ketterling said to expect delays near the airport mid-morning.
