Trump's visit to Billings: Where traffic will be impacted

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

With President Trump coming to town, Billings drivers should expect traffic snags. Road closures will be in place from 2 pm on Thursday through about mid-morning on Friday.

Roads will be shut down on the president's route from Billings Logan International Airport to MetraPark and then again from MetraPark to 1st Ave. North.

Many downtown streets will be closed and you won't be allowed to bring your car into the blocked area unless you are staying or working at the DoubleTree Hotel.

In that case, you will be stopped at a checkpoint by the Burger Dive so your car can be screened.

Billings Police Chief Rich St. John said anything in the blocked off area will be prohibited. Car traffic will not be allowed within the red area (see map) but foot traffic will be allowed inside.

"Foot traffic is not restricted to the biggest extent," Chief St. John said, "but obviously there are places where people can't go."

Barricades and dead-ends will be up to keep foot traffic away from security checkpoints.

Drivers should avoid driving through parking lots or trying to take shortcuts. If you do, St. John said you'll most likely find yourself with some unwanted attention.

St. John advises everyone to "be patient, listen to instructions" and they'll have traffic cleared as quickly as they can.

Police presence will be high for President Trump's visit throughout Billings. Just like when Vice President Pence was in town, local law enforcement plays a huge role.

It takes about 200 uniformed officers, according to numbers provided by Chief St. John. The Billings Police Department will be joined by the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office, Montana Highway Patrol, and the Billings Gambling Unit for President Trump's visit.

Chief St. John said they will have "a full compliment operating on shift, we have people who are in on their days off." and he estimated there will be at least 100 Billings Police Officers working.

Add Sheriff's Deputies, Highway Patrol Troopers, the Gambling Unit, and Secret Service to the mix and you're talking close to 200 officers and agents.
That's not the only large number in the equation.

It's a significant cost according to Chief St. John, the last vice presidential visit cost approximately $20,000 just for the Billings Police Department.

Chief St. John is anticipating a larger charge for this trip.

He said, "Ultimately the citizens of Billings are picking up the tab for this."

The city can be reimbursed for the costs incurred for a Presidential or Vice Presidential visit.

Chief St. John said that is something he is working on for the last visit and will be working on for this visit.

Not only will the BPD be working double time for the Presidential visit they will also be fully staffed to respond to day to day calls placed in the city at the same time.
