First day of hunter education class begins for month of September

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Today is the first day of a week-long hunter education class in Laurel for the month of September. The hunter education class happened at Laurel High School.

Dozens of kids over the age of 11 attended the first day, which was orientation.

"They learned about our concern, mostly about ethics and safety and survival," Eric Olsen said. "The basic things about firearms and that kind of simple stuff, but we'll do it in detail next week."

Eric Olsen is a volunteer instructor who has been teaching hunter education classes for 15 years. Two of the students in class Tuesday are Brennen and Maggie. They explained what they have learned so far.

"The knowledge and experience of knowing how to handle a gun and how to treat the game ," Brennan said.

"Be safe with a firearm and be safe with other people.," Maggie said.

Olsen said these classes are very beneficial.

"We will make sure you know how to handle a firearm safely," Olsen said. "Why they're dangerous and why you want to handle them safely. They're not meant to be out there shooting people, but shooting game and processing game for the benefit of your hunt."

Little Maggie said what her goal is for taking the hunter education class.

"Probably to shoot a doe," she said.

Day 2 of classes will happen next Monday at 6:30 p.m. These classes are required for anyone who wants to hunt in Montana and born after January 1st of 1985.
