Armed Intruder Training at Skyview

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

On Thursday, an armed intruder training session was held for school resource officers in Yellowstone County and a few other counties, as well as, administrators from different area school districts.

Whether real or fake, the sound of gunfire can make anyone jump. Skyview High School held the training session where administrators and SROs went through training on how to deal with an emergency response to an armed threat in the school. "And then, we actually coordinate with our students. Give them things to do and how to do it."

Tim Doll explained that administrators and SROs have become more educated in their response to active shooter situations. At the same time, they have given the suspects knowledge of how they handle those situations. Doll said as the shooters change up their tactics, the schools have to change theirs. "Such as Parkland, where fire alarms have been pulled to get people out into hallways and stuff. So, we have now tried to address those issues on better ways of just not walking into a hallway during a fire alarm, to maybe search the area first and make sure it's safe before we do anything," Doll stated.

Doll said those people who went through the training had a few hours of classroom work. They then went through modules, such as how to grab onto a suspect's gun and fighting. Several scenarios were eventually set up. "Those scenarios could be anything from a simple fire alarm going off. Seeing how they exit out of a fire alarm, making sure it's safe first. We had firearms that were fired with blanks in them. We had suspects enter the classrooms and see how the students engage the threat."

The people who went through this training are now considered instructors. Doll explained, "Our goal is to present it to the school district and then present it to individual classes. Over the course of a few years, we'd be able to get every educator, staff member, and whatnot, trained in entire school district to respond in this certain way."
