Teen starts her own ice cream truck business

BILLINGS, Mont. -

It’s a dream many of us have had at one point another, living a life where you work for yourself. For many people, that dream is just that.

But thanks to a little support from Dad, 19-year-old Bailey Scott is living the dream. She's the owner and operator of Bailey’s Frozen Novelties, a business she started two years ago while attending classes at Montana State University Billings.

Scott says she was at summer camp in Canada when she got a call from her father. Scott describes the conversation as; “He's like I found the truck, we're gonna do this!”

Selling ice cream to kids may sound like easy money… but kids weren’t exactly chasing her ice cream truck down the street. Scott explains; “A lot of times if I do go into a neighborhood, they'll say, like, 'Ooh the ice cream truck was already here.' And I'm like, ah dang it!”

The rocky road didn't stop there. Just two weeks into starting her sophomore year at Montana State University Billings, Scott got sick.

“They found pneumonia in both of my lungs and it had spread to my blood and I was septic, and they were like we have to keep you.”

Scott continues, “It was pretty bad. It was the sickest I've ever been. So, I was in the hospital for six nights. They said it takes six weeks to recover from pneumonia, so I just withdrew from my classes.”

Scott says getting sick may have been a blessing, as withdrawing from school allowed more time for her business to grow. Eventually, Scott added a second truck and eight employees. Now heading into year three, she’s added a small fleet of portable ice cream carts for smaller events.

Scott’s decision to work for herself isn’t uncommon. According to data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics Scott is one of approximately 30,000 young women who chose to be their own boss in 2017. The Bureau reports that roughly 45,000 males her age are also working for themselves.

Scott says it wouldn’t have been possible to succeed without the support of her father. She says she also had to overcome self-doubt. At first, she didn’t even share her plan to start the business with her closest friends. She was afraid of failing.

“I wouldn't have done this if I listened to my own self-doubt.”

She hopes other young people who have recently left school can follow her example. “If you do have a dream in your heart that you want to do… like if you want to be a singer or something, I think you should chase your dream. I don't think it's an accident you have them.”

Here's a closer look at the numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics: Overall 8.7 million people listed themselves as self-employed in 2017.

As for those who started their own business right out of high school; 18,000 were girls aged 18 to 19 and 21,000 were boys the same age.

If you'd like to catch up with Bailey's Frozen Novelties you can follow the business on Facebook. They'll also be working at MetraPark during MontanaFair.
