Here's how you can help at Relay for Life

BILLINGS, Mont. -

The Relay for Life is this Friday in the Magic City and hundreds of people have offered to volunteer at this year's big event.

Vicki Olson Johnson is the co-chair of the survivor committee and organizes volunteering. She said there are about 500 volunteers that step up to help in the event.

"Volunteers are the heart of relay because we really do most of the work and the hands-on tasks."

More than 1,100 participants attended last year's event and more are expected to attend this year. Johnson said the event has many volunteers offering their services to help set-up for the event, but many forget about the day after. She said there is always trash to clean up the day.

Johnson recalls what happened last year.

"After being awake for well over 24 maybe close to 48 hours, we were there until 3 o'clock on Saturday still cleaning up fireworks so every year, we need help in clean-up," Johnson.

Besides clean-up help, Johnson said they can always use extra hands in one particular task.

"We never turn anybody away at 8 o'clock on Friday morning to set up luminaries on the track," Johnson said. "We've had sometimes as many as 7,000 luminaries that we set up."

If you'd like to volunteer and help out, Vicki said you still have a chance just contact the American Cancer Society.
