Montana Folk Festival 2018 kicks off Friday

Posted: Updated:

BUTTE - The city is preparing for a weekend of music, food and fun for this year's Montana Folk Festival.

Six stages will encompass Uptown, with stages on Granite and Copper streets and a Dance Pavilion stage. Festival goers can expect to hear a combination of blues, bluegrass and New Orleans brass bands this year. You can also expect to see some favorites from festivals past.

Festival Director George Everett said, "The bands are new every year, we try not to repeat. It's been 10 years, so occasionally we bring somebody back. This year Willy and the Wild West will be back. They're a very popular Western swing band."

The festival begins Friday, July 13 at 6:30 PM, and continues throughout the weekend until Sunday evening.

"They're setting up tents, getting ready for the opening Friday evening," Everett said. "People start showing up a little earlier than that to get a seat on the grass."

The festival wouldn't be possible without many helping hands.

"We have about 900 volunteers who are all getting ready to do different tasks all over the site," Everett says. "Right now they're doing the installation of the tents."

On Thursday, professional crews arrive to start setting up sound equipment and sound booths.

Everett says it's a good idea to arrive early on Friday to get a good seat on the grass.
