Phase Two of East Helena Viaduct Construction starts

Posted: Updated:

Phase two of the East Helena Viaduct construction project began on Monday.

Our Bliss Zechman is at the site where officials told her this newest leg of the project is just one step in improving safety on what is known as a dangerous stretch of highway in the area.

The area is prone to speeding and wrecks. The Montana Department of Transportation is hoping this project will help fix some of those problems.

MDTs plan includes several installation and repair projects. That includes raising the medians before and after the bridge, repairing driving surfaces and installing overhead lighting.

Contractors started installing traffic signage Monday morning. Actual construction is set to start around Tuesday.

“This project came about with some safety concerns that MDT had with this roadway. It’s been a couple phases in the making the bridge, the deck does need to be recapped. It’s in poor condition and that is going along with this project,” said Solomon Redfern who is the Project Manager.

Phase One is complete. It included installing a barrier rail on the bridge. That was a huge step, as it prevented vehicles from crossing over into oncoming traffic.

The project starts at Nicole St., stretching a couple of miles down to Wylie Dr. All phases of construction are expected to be complete by early November of this year.

MDT has implemented a zipper merge system on this project, which reduces speed and traffic backup. However, they say you can expect delays as construction continues.
