BOZEMAN - Rescuers say despite calm waters, a kayak accident led to the death of a 72-year-old Bozeman man on the Jefferson River.

A release from the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office says Sunday at 11:45 AM, rescuers responded to a report of an unresponsive man whose kayak flipped on the diversion dam south of the Sappington Bridge on the Jefferson River.

Bruce Vanlandingham, 72, was later pronounced dead at Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital. His cause of death is not yet finalized by the coroner

Gallatin Sheriff Brian Gootkin said “Two people were out on calm water doing everything right and tragedy still struck.”

Sheriff Gootkin reminds floaters and kayakers to go with a partner, wear a lifejacket and carry a phone in a waterproof container in case you need to call for help.
