Cody rock climbers safer now thanks to new parking lot

Posted: Updated:

Cody – People who climb 500 foot cliffs near Cody are safer now, thanks to the Wyoming Department of Transportation. Their climbs are as challenging as ever.  But, the trip to the area locals call “The Island” is safer now.

For years, climbers had to walk through two dark tunnels to get to the popular climbing area. They had to park outside the tunnels, then walk near passing cars inside the tunnels. WYDOT opened a new parking lot recently at the base of the cliffs.

WYDOT spokesman Cody Beers explained, “There’s been some criticism about this area, about rockfall, about possibly encouraging more people to climb.  Our issue is the highway, and highway safety, pedestrian safety. And, we want people to be safe as they’re driving toward our country’s first National Park.”

Highway 14/16/20, which passes through the tunnels, is the route from Cody to Yellowstone’s East Entrance. Climbers have come from around the world to climb the granite cliffs between the tunnels for decades.
