Tips on how to be proactive against wildfires

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

On a rainy day like today, it may not feel like it, but fire season is close at hand. Most fire departments are doing everything they can to prevent wildfires.

Wildfires can affect ranchers and farmers along with their properties. KULR-8 spoke with the Columbus Fire Rescue District which helps in fighting wildfires across the state and country.

Fire Chief Rich Cowger said the statewide forecast predicts an average fire season this year. To be proactive, the Chief recommends fuel mitigation around properties, making sure fuels are reduced, and properties are clean of debris that can burn easily.

He also recommended addresses in rural areas be clearly marked, so firefighters don't waste time finding those locations.

"Montana is a fire prone environment," Chief Cowger said. "It's not if it's going to happen, it's when. And the best way they can help us is to take care of things now. We can only do so much if they haven't done stuff up in the front end of things."

Cowger said wild lands are pretty green right now but at some point, they will dry out, creating lots of fuel for fires.
