ZooMontana river otter pup passes away

BILLINGS, Mont. -

ZooMontana announced the passing of one its baby otters Thursday.

Frodo was the runt of the "Fab Four" litter, which was unexpectedly born to one of the zoo's river otters in February. The otter pups were hand-raised by zookeepers after the mother rejected the litter.

The news was announced in a post on the zoo's Facebook page:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of one of our Fab Four baby otters. Frodo was a fighter from the beginning, always lagging behind as the runt. He was always more susceptible to infections and illness but always battled through them. However, despite the incredible efforts of our keepers and vets, his last battle could not be won. Our thoughts are with our keepers, whom have dedicated countless hours to their care. Necropsy results are pending.

The other three are doing well and have started the process of exploring their new home. They can be seen on exhibit for short spurts at 12:45 Friday - Tuesday. Please note, this is subject to change, but we will work to keep you posted.
