Former Miles City teacher behind bars after allegedly having an affair with student

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The Custer County Sheriff's Office identifies Morgan Pett as the former Miles City teacher arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The victim in this case, is just 15 years old.

Morgan Pett is being charged after his wife found  nude photos of the student on his personal computer in January 2017.
In court documents, investigators spoke with the minor, known as JFV, who said she had begun a relationship with Pett during the months of October and November 2016.

Pett began texting her on a daily basis. The defendant also asked the minor to download an app called 'Wickr', which allows for pictures and messages to go away after 10 minutes.

JFV stated on December 9th, 2016, the defendant asked her if she wanted to walk his dogs at Pirogue Island. This would be the defendant's first encounter with the student in which their relationship progressed. On January 4th, Pett messaged JFV and asked her to delete everything after his wife went through his phone. On January 7th, the defendant again sent a text to JFV telling her the cops were at his house and to delete everything. On February 12th, a forensic case report indicated a partial DNA found from a blanket in JFV's vehicle matched Morgan Pett.

In a statement sent from Superintendent Keith Campbell to KULR-8 Wednesday. He states Morgan Pett was a science teacher at the high school starting in 2008. He states he was notified of the incident the first weekend of January 2017 and immediately placed Pett on administrative leave, pending investigation.

Campbell goes on to say "Mr. Pett was never again in front of our students. The matter was thoroughly investigated by administrators and on February 9, 2017, Pett resigned his employment with the district."

KULR-8 spoke with a neighbor who lives near the high school. He said he has a couple of children who still go to Custer County District High School and even took some of his classes. The man said Pett seemed like a normal, swell guy and is shocked at the recent news.

A neighbor who lives right next to the Pett's said she was disgusted at the news because even though both are in the wrong, Pett is an adult. She said she has seen investigators coming and going from the house for months. She also said she feels sorry for the Pett's son who will have to grow up with this situation.

We also spoke with a former student who wishes to remain anonymous of Custer County High School in Miles City who said she had a class with the science teacher. The former student said Pett always had favorites and would lean more towards females than males. She explained the fine line between a teacher and a student.

"There's one thing to get along with a teacher, but it's different to be best friends," Said the former student. "There's a point where you're parenting with a kid, but you should never be friends. They're there to be an instructor- to teach them. There's a fine line between teacher and student and then there's that middle where you should never be."

Pett faces a maximum penalty of imprisonment in the state prison for a maximum term of not less than 4 years or more than 100 years and a $50 thousand dollar fine. His next hearing will be on June 19th at 9:30 A.M.
