Thursday's severe storms bring hail, wind, and tornado damage

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Severe storms rolled through Southeastern Montana Thursday evening with Custer and Prairie counties getting the brunt of it.

Reports came in of golf ball size hail and strong wind gusts.

As of 11 am Friday, 47 storm reports were sent to the Billings and Glasgow National Weather Service offices starting Thursday morning and ending Thursday night.

A majority of the damage happened in the Eastern Plains with hail, straight line winds, and torrential downpours.

Storm chasers captured the severe storms on camera.

In one of the videos storm chaser, Matt Hanvold held some hail that he said is hen egg sized.

Matt is a storm spotter for Big Sky Weather and goes out in severe storms all the time.

But he said Thursday night's situation was a, "very dangerous situation east of Miles City on your way to Terry." he warned, "Do not go through flood waters. We were forced to and it was very scary.”

Strong winds toppled over trees and highway signs.

The winds that came through Thursday night were more straight line winds.

They will blow against the trees and the trees can topple over backward.

Rotating or tornadic winds will cause trees to rotate and will mangle the branches.

Montana did see one tornado 8 miles WSW of Lame Deer in Big Horn County.

That was rated an EF-0 by the Billings National Weather Service office and was on the ground for less than 5 minutes.

It did toss a grain bin 250 yards over cars and power lines.

When strong to severe storms are in your area we remind you to keep your eyes to the sky, turn around don't drown, and when thunder roars head indoors.
