Tester, Rosendale gear up for November

Posted: Updated:

Senator Jon Tester ran unopposed Tuesday night for the Democratic Nomination to retain his seat as one of Montana's two U.S. Senators. But now, the real work begins.

Tester will now face off against Republican Candidate Matt Rosendale. After Rosendale's win Tuesday night, Tester's campaign  sent out the following statement, which says in part, "Matt Rosendale is an East Coast Developer who looks out for himself... He's bad for Montana's public lands, he's bad for Montana's veterans, and as Insurance Commissioner he rubber stamped higher health costs for Montanans."

Tester also announced he will be participating in a debate on June 17th in Whitefish.

Matt Rosendale's camp says that Rosendale is planning to attend.

Rosendale's nomination wasn't called until after 11:00pm. It was a tight race most of the night, with Russ Fagg ahead of Rosendale by about one percentage point. But by 10:15, it was clear that Rosendale was gaining momentum, as some of his home counties began releasing numbers.

Moving ahead though, Rosendale says he's ready to take on Tester in November with help from his former opponents.

"All three of my opponents in the primary election contacted me last night, and they not only congratulated me, but each one of them pledged their support and offered whatever help and assistance they can bring. Which is going to quickly unify this Republican party and put us in a position to make sure we defeat Jon Tester."

Of course throughout these next few months, Rosendale will continue to fulfill his duties as the Montana State Auditor. If he does beat Tester in November, there's no need for a special election. The governor will appoint a replacement to finish out the rest of his term.
