Democratic Party filed lawsuit on Green Party who can impact election

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The Green Party qualifies to be on the election ballot for the first time in ten years. Democrats attempted to knock the third party off the ballot by filing a lawsuit.

The Democratic Party questioned the legality of petition signatures, a certification of the Green Party's appearance on this year's ballot. The democratic party filed a lawsuit earlier this year to keep the green party off the ballot.

KULR-8 spoke with Paul Pope, a professor of political science at MSU-Billings, who explained why the Democratic Party was striving to keep the green party off the ballot. Pope said third parties tend to be left or right leaning parties. He said when a voter chooses a third party, in this case, the Green Party, that means one less voter for a Democratic or Republican candidate.

"If the Democrats are winning this election by 1-3 % and a green party candidate is pulling around that- potentially, they could lose the election to the republican side.," Pope said. "So, the Democrats are challenging the validity of some of the signatures the Green Party used to get on the ballot."

The lawsuit has since been denied.

Pope said the percentage of Americans across the nation who identify as independent is between 40 and 45 percent. He added Republicans and Democrats are close to each other in almost every race with a margin of a 1 to 3 percent difference. He also said with third parties on the ballot, the Green Party in this case, they can receive a 1 to 3 percent outcome.

So, Pope said, if one party is in the lead, the Green Party can cut down a percentage of the leader's number of votes. He said by opening up a third party, the race can go either way.
