Parasite Prevention

Posted: Updated:

Mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks… 3 words you never want to hear in one sentence.

They’re starting to become a real problem not only here in Montana but in other areas across our nation.

In fact, diseases spread by these parasites have tripled over the past several years.

According to the CDC and WebMD, there are a handful of things you can do to prevent bug bites from any three of these culprits.

For ticks:

• spray clothing with 0.5% permethrin

• insect repellent containing DEET

• wear long, bright colored clothing

•avoid brushy areas with high grass

•tuck pants into shoes

For mosquitoes:

• spray clothing with 0.5% permethrin

• insect repellent containing DEET or lemon/ eucalyptus oil

• wear long clothing, thick enough to stop a mosquito

• avoid areas of standing water

When it comes to fleas, the regiment is about the same.

However, you want to keep a close eye on your pet(s) since they'll be the most susceptible.

Constantly check them for any signs of fleas and provide the proper preventative medication.
