Residents along riverbank brace for potential flooding

BILLINGS, Mont. -

A flood warning for Yellowstone County continues and water level predictions have reduced.

Chris and Steve Lehenbauer live just off of the banks of the Yellowstone River in Laurel. The river has already been rising onto their property and they have sandbags in place to protect their home.

Steve Lehenbauer walked around his yard to point out where the river has slowly been engulfing his yard. He said he's not worried about river flooding because he's prepared.

"We built a landscape and our entertainment area down here knowing it would go underwater," Lehenbauer said. "It's mostly made of stone."

On top of that, Lehenbauer built dykes and placed sandbags to help push back the river. He is also insured.

"We got flood insurance," Lehenbauer added. "We've always had it. We thought about getting rid of it, but there are times like this where you're like 'Thank god we have it,' you know?"

A neighbor nearby, Herb Stoick, lives on the banks of the river and said he's not worried about the river flooding. He's more concerned about erosion.

"This bank along here, it'll cut off and cave in," Stoick said. "Back in the 90's, I could hear it. There would be 20-feet-deep chunks of dirt falling off into the river."

Stoick said he'll just have to wait and see what happens. As for Lehenbauer, he said he is prepared.

"We'll let the river come through here and when it goes down, it's going to leave a big pond for us and then we'll just pump that out with some pumps and let it dry out and get back to our normal life. Hopefully in a couple of weeks."

Lehenbauer said even though there's still a lot of work to be done, he's still confident that his home will be protected.
