Public Works Department prepares for flooding within the city

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Preparations are underway for the city of Billings because of the expected flooding.

Public Works Director, Dave Mumford, said with a combination like the Yellowstone River's potential flooding and the rainfall we might be seeing these next couple of days, it's very likely the city of Billings will see flooding throughout the area.

Mumford said the storm drains will be the main problem throughout the city. In fact, Billings is already seeing issues. He said if the river levels get too high, the river will start to flow back up into the storm drain system. He also said the public may see the streets filled with water, but the Public Works Department will try to help protect homes from property damage.

"If the river does get above 15 feet like they're projecting, then what will occur is the storm water can't get out," Mumford said. "So even if you get a tiny rain, the water has nowhere to go so that is one of our big concerns. The concern is there will be the potential for flooding because the storm water system just can't leave."

Mumford said people should not expect any water issues within households. He said the Public Works Department has rented 30 million gallon-a-day pumps in preparation for the flooding. He also said the department is building dykes around certain buildings to keep them operational so the city has water and power.

Mumford said the real question now is when the city should expect to see the water go down.
