USPS celebrates 100th anniversary of US airmail service

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The United States Postal Service celebrated its 100th anniversary of U.S. airmail service.

According to the U.S. Postal Service website, on May 15th, 1918, during World War I, a small group of army pilots delivered mail that linked Washington, Philadelphia, and New York City. This initiated the world's first regularly scheduled airmail service. The U.S. Postal Service is celebrating the anniversary with a forever stamp. The stamp celebrates the courage of the pioneering air mail carriers and the success of the service.

"It is hard to imagine that it has been almost a hundred years since the first airmail flights began," Executive Director of Air Force History and Museums Policies and Programs Elliot Gruber said. "I don't think anybody could've imagined the significance of those flights would have on future air travel. Today's commercial aviation industry is a direct result of the post office's vision a century ago."

A second stamp will be issued on August 11th this year commemorating  U.S. airmail as an official function of the post office.
