Crow Tribe discusses contract agreement night before voting begins

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The legislative branch of the Crow Tribe is received public comment on a vote taking place tomorrow. The vote regards an energy partnership agreement that would allow a  group called ACI to explore and analyze the oil reserves on the crow reservation.

More than a hundred people from the Crow Tribe attended the public meeting tonight to understand more about the vote expected to take place tomorrow. David Freedman works for the executive branch and helped produce a contract that would allow a group called ACI to drill on reservation land.

"They can, in a small area, on a portion of the reservation that has been identified in the contract and the thought there is to ensure that these folks are capable of doing what they say and the tribe would have a small sample size in order to make that determination," Freedman said.

Tribal Chairman Not Afraid said this is the best option for the tribe. Freedman agrees.

"The revenue arrangement that the tribe would be receiving from this agreement is one that is larger than the tribe has historically been able to negotiate, so that is of particular interest to the tribe," Freedman said.

But many people from the Crow Tribe spoke up against the contract, especially because the Crow people have only just discussed the agreement a night before voting begins."

"There's more work that has to be done on this," said one Crow Tribe member who attended the meeting.
