Broadview School hosts Honor our Heroes Day

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

"An ordinary person in an unexpected situation that does extraordinary things"

That's how Major General Matthew Quinn, Commander of the Montana National Guard, describes a hero.

Heroes are exactly who Broadview School honored in a celebration held Tuesday afternoon.

Police officers, firefighters, Fish, Wildlife, and Parks game warden, and the National Guard were all at Broadview School to celebrate heroes.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and that's the message Broadview School wanted their students to learn.

Music Teacher, Janet Jensen, said: "we celebrate our military, which we need to celebrate, we need to celebrate our law enforcement, our Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, all those people who volunteer, but locally we need to recognize those people who volunteer within our community."

Jansen said she planned the event after noticing respect has been lacking in schools.

She said, "We need to have work ethics, we need to have respect, we need to have loyalty."

Jansen brought in General Matthew Quinn, Judge Pedro Hernandez, and local police and firefighters to talk with students about their interpretations of heroes.

The day wasn't all talks though there was also some fun.

Students participated in a jousting bounce house provided by the Montana National Guard.

For the high school students, meeting with National Guardsmen let them know that there is another option after graduation.

Broadview Superintendent, Gary Fisher, said, "there's different ways to be successful, and if their dream is to go to college and if they don't have the money right away they have the military as an option to be able to further themselves educationally shows our kids that there is another option out there."

Students K-12 also had the opportunity to view emergency vehicles but the highlight of the day was watching General Quinn fly off in his helicopter.

Superintendent Fisher and Jansen say they hope other schools will follow in their footsteps of teaching respect and honoring heroes but most of all teaching students to go out and do good.
