Laurel High School faces budget issues after voters turn down mill levy

Posted: Updated:
LAUREL, Mont. -

On Tuesday, Laurel voters voted against the elementary and high school mill levies.

Now, the school faces issues that will go unresolved.
The high school levy was just over $200,000.

Leaky ceilings, old textbooks, and broken doors.
These are just some of the issues Laurel Public High School faces every day.
"The staff has done a phenomenal job band-aiding it and making it work but things break over time," Principal Shawnda Zahara said.
But now, some of these issues will be put on the back burner to address the larger issues the school district faces.
"We've already sat down and had some preliminary things, we're really starting to look at programs," Superintendent Linda Filpula said.
The staff said, one of it's biggest concerns is the science department.
The school won't be able to afford another teacher, which put the school's science accreditation at stake.
"We have a red flag or a yellow flag for our science department for accreditation and we'll keep working towards making sure students have the offerings they need," Zahara said. "However class sizes will be maxed out at 30."
In fact, Filpula said the school has already had to cut staff.
"We had to cut three teachers last year from the high school alone plus an instructional aid and that was hard."
Zahara said she wants the Laurel community to realize the issues the school faces are ones that will need to be addressed eventually.
"By doing without for so long, people forget there are a lot of needs that get pushed aside that someday will actually become a high priority and they will cost a lot more to fix at that point than if we'd done a little bit along the way."
