Man involved in standoff with BPD identified

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The man who was involved in a two-hour long standoff with Billings police is identified as Michael Jeffrey Anderson.

The following a press release from the Montana Department Justice Division of Criminal Investigation on the incident:

At the request of the Billings Police Department, agents with the Montana Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) are investigating a shooting in Billings involving a local resident and probation officers.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 1, two Probation and Parole officers with the Montana Department of Corrections went to conduct a routine home check at the residence of Michael Jeffrey Anderson, 60, when they were met with gunfire.  The officers returned fire and escaped uninjured.  Anderson then barricaded himself in his home, located at 1611 2nd Avenue North.  Shortly after Billings Police Department (BPD)  Officers arrived, they established a four-block perimeter around the home to ensure the safety of neighborhood residents.

Several agencies and resources responded to the scene, including a BPD SWAT team in a Ballistic Engineered Armored Response (BEAR) truck, the Billings Fire Department, and the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the U.S. Marshal’s Office.  Anderson failed to respond to officer commands, even after his front door was removed by officers in the BEAR.  In a continued attempt to resolve the standoff peacefully, officers fired rounds of beanbags into the home as well as a diversion device.  Officers then gained entry into the home; the PBD SWAT team took Anderson into custody around 7:00 pm.  Anderson was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital for treatment.

Yesterday, Billings Police Chief Rich St. John requested the Montana Department of Justice’s DCI take the lead on investigating this incident.  DCI agents are on scene conducting interviews and processing evidence, including numerous weapons recovered inside the residence.  The Billings Police Department is assisting in the investigation.

The Probation and Parole officers are currently on paid administrative leave per Department of Corrections policy pending the completion of DCI’s investigation.  Anderson remains hospitalized in stable condition.  Anderson is currently serving probation for a 2007 assault with a weapon offense in Gallatin County.  In 2009, Anderson was also federally convicted of possession of a machine gun.

Once DCI’s investigation is complete, the case file will be sent to the Yellowstone County Attorney’s Office.  Charges are expected to be filed this week.
