Billings standoff recap, neighbors react

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Earlier this evening, a police standoff occurred on the corner of 2nd Avenue N. and N. 16th Street in Billings. Billings Police Chief Rich St. John said at around 5 P.M., probation and parole officers went to a Billings home, knocked on the door, and were met with gunfire.

The Billings Police Department, as well as local and federal agencies, responded to the shooting.

"We deployed a bean bag initially to disable two cameras that were on two corners of the house," Chief St. John said. "That was the first four shots that you heard."

The bomb squad sent a drone inside the house and the front door was then taken down.

"From there, the officers could see that the individual was there, he was down, and he had been injured," the chief said.

Chief St. John said the man had been injured and a rifle was within close proximity to him. The chief said a flash bang was then deployed just before officers made entry and finally arrested the suspect.

"Absolutely amazing on what you saw take place," Chief St. John said. "I'm glad that we were able to resolve this peacefully."

The chief said he's glad the officers were able to do a textbook operation and since probation officers are involved, the investigation will be turned over to the state.

"The state of Montana DCI or Department of Criminal Investigations will handle the investigation of the shooting," Chief St. John said.

Edward Hingst is a neighbor who witnessed the standoff and said police responded very well to the situation.

"Their response was incredible," Hingst said. "I don't think I've ever seen the police respond to something like this as quick as they did."

Brandon Moreland also lives nearby and said he's concerned about living in the area.

"It makes me want to move," Moreland said.

Chief St. John said it's unknown how the suspect was injured. It could've been from probation officers returning fire or from the beanbags deployed by police. That, of course, will be determined by the investigation.
