With less than a month to go before the track and field state tournaments, most competitions are pretty open as to who will be state champions. However, Sidney's Garrison Hughes has pretty much wrapped up a pole vault championship before the festivities even begin. On Saturday at the Glendive Elks meet Hughes cleared 16'9" to win the pole vault, this only a week after Hughes cleared 16'6" in Dickinson, North Dakota.
The state record for boys pole vault in Montana is 16'5", set by Helena High's Chase Smith in 2015. Hughes is expected to break that record at the state A-B track and field meet in Laurel on May 25-26. Following his time with the Eagles, Hughes will attend Nebraska to pole vault for the Huskers.
