Tintina changing name to Sandfire Resources America

Posted: Updated:

Effective Friday, February 2nd, the company behind the Black Butte Copper Mine near the Smith River will no longer be known as Tintina Resources; they are now changing their name to reflect their Australian roots, to Sandfire Resources America.

Company CEO John Shanahan says while there are between 250 and 300 shareholders throughout Central Montana, the Australian company Sandfire Resources is a 78 percent shareholder. In other words, while there are a lot of players, the biggest one by far is operating a world away.

In the past, some opponents of the mine have expressed worry over operations being controlled by an out-of-country company, but Shanahan says if anything, the transparency revealed by this name change should convince skeptics that the almost  $300 million project is in good hands.

"Frankly the reason we changed the name is so people are well aware of who it is. And I think ultimately you look at what they do, what their capabilities are, their commitment to doing it right, their commitment to Montana and the communities... I think it's a very positive thing," says Shanahan.

Currently, the company is awaiting on a draft Environmental Impact Statement from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. Shanahan says they are hoping to see that by the end of this year.

To DEET or not to DEET… that is the question. You might not think it matters as long as it keeps those pesky mosquitoes away, but you might want to take a closer look at that bug spray bottle before you spray it on you or your kiddo's.  One of the biggest concerns when it comes to bug spray is if the chemical N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, more commonly known as ‘DEET’, is safe to use; especially on children. The good news is that you’re 100% in the clear. ...
