Liberian refugee sworn in as Helena Mayor

Posted: Updated:

Helena officially has a new mayor and his first order of business is to deal with the mounting snow problem in the Capital city.

Wilmot Collins says his email is already inundated with comments surrounding the lack of shoveling on sidewalks in Helena, creating a very dangerous situation.
Helena’s Parks and Recreation Department is doing all they can
, including fining residents who do not clear their sidewalks in a timely manner.

In front of an unusually large crowd at the Capitol building, Wilmot Collins officially became Mayor Collins, the first black mayor since Helena became an incorporated town.

"I open my arms, I am ready to work with you," he said.

Collins was surrounded by a support system that included family from Boston, Georgia and even a few from his home country of Liberia.

Not one for attention, Mayor Collins was slightly nervous about the event but credits the passion he has for this city that got him through.

Collins said, "It’s the people of Helena, that’s who we are. I’m happy. I’m sure they are happy. They went through this journey with me"

In the long run, he's focused on providing essential services, affordable housing and spreading awareness for veteran and teenage homelessness. But recently, his phone has been ringing off the hook about a colder matter.

"My email is so packed right now from snow, from issues on snow removal. We've got to get to the table and talk," said Collins

The new mayor already seems to have a majority of the community’s support, but those closest to him, including his own son Bliss, said he will work to gain the trust of everyone and prove he deserves the title of mayor.

"It’s not a one-man show, he relies on the people around him and utilizes the people who have been there. I think he can do a lot,” said Bliss Collins

Mayor Collins unseated Jim Smith, the man who held the mayoral position for 16 years.

Collins will serve four years at the helm of the Capital City.
