Operation planned for ZooMontana tiger with abscessed tooth

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

An operation is underway for one of ZooMontana's Siberian tigers.

ZooMontana staffers realized something was wrong with the tiger when they noticed a small cut near her face. ZooMontana director Jeff Ewelt said four-year-old Jasmine was not showing any signs that something was wrong, until they decided to treat a small cut near her eye.

When they flushed the cut out, they noticed she had an abscessed tooth.

"We're planning for her to be put under again and take a look on how we're going to take that tooth out. Now obviously at this point, we're thinking extraction, rather than root canal just because it's a pretty good abscessed," Ewelt said. "It'll probably better for her just to remove that tooth. So we hope to do that sooner than later, obviously we don't want her to be in any pain."

Ewelt says many carnivorous animals in the wild like tigers are prone to getting cracked teeth from hunting.

In Jasmine's case, Ewelt thinks she could have gotten it from fighting with her sister or chewing on a chunk of bone. He says the extraction process is expected to last several hours which includes repairs and stitches.

He said the good news is Jasmine does not appear to be in any pain and she is eating well, but for the care of the animal, he says they want to quickly move forward with treatment.

Ewelt said there is no exact date yet for when the procedure will take place, but he said he hopes to videotape Jasmine's extraction process so ZooMontana guests can get a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes.

The last time we saw Kenna Hazen, she was in the hospital after a bull riding accident left her with severe injuries. Six months later we wondered how this tough teen is holding up.
