Dealing with winter allergies

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Many people might think the cold weather brings an end to seasonal pollen allergies, but if you're sneezing and coughing again, then the winter season may be to blame.

However, how do you know if you're experiencing a cold or winter allergies?

Dr. Skye Heston from RiverStone Health said that coming into the winter season, there's actually more allergens than what you might expect.

He said inflammation of the nose, ear pressure, a slight cough and fatigue are all common in the winter.

Dr. Heston said the duration of your symptoms and the severity are two ways to tell if it's a cold or allergies.

He mentions if you're experiencing a temperature of 100 degrees, it indicates something more severe. He adds that knowing your family history of alleriies is important when going in for a diagnosis.

"If the allergies seem severe enough, there are allergy tests that can be done. I usually recommend that be done with an allergist because they can do some skin testing and blood testing." Dr. Heston said.  "That's a very specific way to diagnose those allergies and once those allergies are identified then people can be more aggressive towards it and eliminating it from their environment, if possible."

Dr. Heston said over the counter medications or a nasal spray can be a quick fix to treat allergies, but if your allergies worsen or become severe, consult your doctor.

With National Finals Rodeo week coming to an end, we wanted to check in with one teen bull rider who wants to tackle the world of professional bull riding with full speed. The last time we saw Kenna Hazen, she was in the hospital after a bull riding accident left her with severe injuries. Six months later we wondered how this tough teen is holding up.
