Operation Second Chance gives wounded veterans the experience of a lifetime

Posted: Updated:
RED LODGE, Mont. -

"being in the chair, being injured, you can't just pick up and go and just do some of the things that maybe you used to be able to do."

Oftentimes, veterans who return from war with disabilities face difficulties and struggle to do things they used to enjoy.

Operation Second Chance is a program to help disabled veterans take back their life.

"We take them out of their environment, hospitals or whatever," Retreat Program Director Bob Larson said. "We get them to places like Montana, Colorado, Florida, Texas and other locations where they can enjoy seeing something a little bit different and doing something that maybe they haven't done before."

As part of the programs winter trip, the guys had the chance to learn how to ski using a sled.

Operation Second Chance partnered with both Eagle Mount and Red Lodge to make this trip happen.

"You might just not be able to go to your local ski resort if you have one and say 'okay I want to ski today,'" Veteran Nick Koulchar said. "They might not have the equipment or the knowledge, whatever the case may be. So to be able to have a program that lets me be able to see and experience things like this...it's amazing."

"Being here is just super amazing and we're here with our brothers and other people that are just like me," Veteran Ramesh Michael Haytasingh said

The trip consists of more than just skiing. The guys have several excursions planned while they're in Montana.

They were even able to bring their families along, which they say makes this even more special because none of them are from Montana.

So, what did the veterans think of Montana?

"I've skied a couple different places, and this makes everybody else look like a mole hill."

PULLMAN, Wash. - Six-year-old Denny Curran should be enjoying his last few days of summer before first grade. He should be teasing his brother, splashing in the pool, giving his parents a hard time about vegetables. Instead, Denny is dead, the victim of a horrific, freak bicycle accident that could happen to your child too. "Denny was an extraordinary child," his father Keith Curran told KHQ.
