BILLINGS, Mont. -

A federal judge finds 19-year-old Jesus Deniz Mendoza is competent to stand trial.

Mendoza appeared before Judge Susan P. Watters Wednesday afternoon in Billings.

Mendoza is charged with double murder, attempted murder and other counts in the July 2015 deaths of Jason and Tana Shane near Pryor.

Authorities say the couple stopped to help Mendoza, when he shot and killed them and wounded their 26-year-old daughter.

The results of the mental examination of Mendoza remain sealed. After arguments were made in court, Judge Watters ruled Mendoza is competent to stand trial.

His attorneys have said he will rely on an insanity defense, if the case goes to trial.
