University of Montana president to step down

Posted: Updated:

University of Montana President Royce Engstrom will be stepping down from his position at the university. Commissioner of Higher Education, Clayton Christian, made the announcement Thursday morning.

Christian says Engstrom's resignation will be effective December 31.

Christian's statement reads:

"After careful discussion and consideration, University of Montana President Royce Engstrom and I have decided that he will step down as UM’s president effective December 31.  I asked President Engstrom to consider this transition at this time based on my belief that a change in leadership direction is the right step for UM going forward.  I greatly appreciate the graciousness and care with which President Engstrom engaged in our discussion."

News of Engstrom's resignation comes following confirmation the university will be making several budget cuts including faculty and staff layoffs. UM says they had an emergency meeting Wednesday night to discuss the university's financial situation. Engstrom sent out an email Wednesday confirming the additional cuts.
