Bobcats Stun Griz, Win 116th Brawl of the Wild

Posted: Updated:

The Montana State Bobcats were heavy underdogs coming into the 116th Brawl of the Wild. It had been a lost season, and with only one Big Sky Conference win on the year, it did not look good coming into the yearly matchup with the Montana Grizzlies. But the Cats ended the three game losing streak against Montana, beating the Griz in Missoula 24-17.

It did not take long for the Griz to find the endzone on their former defensive coordinator Ty Gregorak. Quarterback Brady Gustafson found Justin Calhoun for a 58-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. Many thought that the Griz offense, who had been so prolific at home at season, would continue their dominance.

But the Cats and their freshman quarterback Chris Murray regained the momentum. Murray was spectacular on the ground, including an incredible front flip into the endzone in the first quarter for a score. His second big play was a 48-yard touchdown run where we outran the Grizzly defense to the endzone.

The Cats held on to their lead at halftime, and a Gabe Peppenger field goal out of the break put the Cats up 17-7. Then senior running back Chad Newell punched in a four-yard touchdown run to cap off another long drive.

Montana would attempt to cut into the Bobcat lead throughout the third quarter. Kicker Brandon Purdy hit a 28-yard field goal to bring the deficit within 14. They would get as close as seven after senior running back Joey Counts punched in a three-yard touchdown run towards the end of the fourth quarter.

Montana State would seal the win though on a key fourth down play when Murray had a 26-yard completion to Connor Sullivan.

Both team's seasons come to an end today. For Montana State, they end their 4-7 (2-6) year on a high note beating their rival. For the Montana, disappointment and missed opportunities will be on the minds of the players and coaching staff as they will miss the playoffs for the first time under second year head coach Bob Stitt.

The Great Divide Trophy will be returning to Bozeman for the first time in three seasons.
