Misconceptions of #SafetyPin, what it really means

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

Safety pins are popping up in selfies all over social media. After the election many people started associated the safety pin as a symbol opposing Donald Trump.

KULR-8 did some digging into the safety pins and found out they have a deeper message behind them.

We reached out to a local non-profit that has been using the safety pin for a while now. They tell me that the little accessory is really a sign to let people know they stand against bullying.

People across the U.S. are attaching safety pins to their outfits to show support for minorities, immigrants, women and the LGBTQ community. Those wearing the pins are more likely to stand against bullying and speak up for the vulnerable.

Susan Barnes with not in our town, keeps a jar of safety pins at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church to encourage others to stand against bullies.

"It's pro-kindness, it's anti-bullying, it's anti-hate, it's pro-LGBTQ, it's pro-Muslim, it's pro-immigrants, it's pro-Jews, it is pro whoever is the target of bullying hatred, and harassment," Barnes said.

America didn't start the safety pin movement. It crossed the pond from the United Kingdom when there was protests of Brexit, to show immigrants they were people of safety.
