Teen Driving Safety Day: Tips for parents, students

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

It's Teen Driver Safety Awareness Day.

It's a day to remind parents, teenagers and teachers to think clearly about the rules of the road when your teen gets behind the wheel.

Something interesting I learned that I want to share.

Billings Senior High School Driver's Education Teacher Jodi Stugelmeyer says it's not texting that's the number one cause of wrecks with teens. It's actually having multiple passengers.

Cell phones are still a distraction. The moment it pings, many are quick to get on that phone. Parents can help limit phone distractions using apps.

Stugelmeyer says the apps can turn off the teens' phones if they exceed 10 miles per hour. She says to check with your provider or your insurance company about those apps.

Driver's education sessions are scheduled in the fall, winter and spring. Depending on which session they attend, students may not experience driving in all conditions. Stugelmeyer says it's important for parents to help their teens learn to navigate the roads in inclement weather.

Each year, the Montana Motor Vehicle Department issues thousands of licenses to first-time drivers. The vast majority are new teen drivers.

Sadly, many of those drivers lack the experience to properly navigate the unexpected challenges that arise, once they're licensed to get behind the wheel alone.

Montana Highway Patrol publishes a booklet of crash data every year. I took a close look at the data for crashes reported in 2015 and found more crashes happen between 5 and 6 p.m. than other time of the day in our state.

Friday, by far, sees the most crashes and December has more crashes reported yearly than other months. That's a lot for teen drivers to work through.

When working through the numbers, we see that it's males 25 to 34, who are involved in the most crashes in our state.  As for teen drivers, males are slightly more likely to have a crash than females.

According to Montana Highway Patrol's 2015 Annual Report, 4,084 teens from the ages of 15 to 19  were involved in a wreck. An additional 167 teens, 15 years old or younger, were in car crashes. The report also states in 2015 there were 28 vehicle fatalities involving teens ages 19 and younger.
