Rural ambulance services considered for Yellowstone County

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

An increasing number of calls for medical help in Yellowstone County has several agencies looking to make a change.

Brad shoemaker, Yellowstone County disaster and emergency services director, said in 1995, there were under 400 calls for service. In 2012 there were more than 1,000 calls.

Shoemaker said volunteer services are overwhelmed and response time can be, at times, up to two hours.

Shoemaker, county commissioners and rural fire chiefs are looking at how they can help. He said they would like to have two, 24-hour paid and trained paramedics for the county. He said the start-up cost would be around $2.5 million. This would cost property owners in parts of the county about $90 a year.

Shoemaker said right now, they are putting finishing touches on the plan. County commissioners would then schedule public comments.

This ambulance service area would not include the city of Billings, the Billings Urban Fire Service Area, Lockwood and Crow Reservation.
