Enrollment down, hopes up at MSUB

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

There are fewer students attending MSUB this fall but the good news is the decline is so slight -- the university will not have to make budget adjustments this academic year.

Overall enrollment is down 1.4% percent from a year ago.

The steepest decline is among full-time enrolled students at -5.7%.

However, enrollment is up 10.2% at the City College campus.

The big win for the university is the “Concurrent Enrollment Program.” The program allows high school students to get a head start on their college career. It jumped from 82 students last fall to 247 this year.

Chancellor Mark Nook is encouraged by the numbers.

“We're up at City College. That's good news, that's something that puts a smile on our faces. We see the freshman class at our university campus is up 1.9% so all of those things show we are moving in the right direction. The whole picture is not quite where we want it yet, but pieces are settling so we're turning it around in the right place.”

Chancellor Nook says the key to growth for MSUB is continuing to recruit more high school students out of Yellowstone County.

Nook says he sees more opportunities for students out of Bozeman as-well-as the Dakotas and Wyoming.
