FAA rules for commercial use of drones

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

The Federal Aviation Administration estimates there will be 600,000 commercial drone aircraft operating in the United State within the year as the result of new safety rules that opened the skies to them on Monday.

First, all operators must register their drones, whether you're using it for pleasure or for business.

FAA authorities say the rules governing the operation of small commercial drones are designed to increase safety without getting in the way of innovation.

Commercial operators initially complained the new rules would be too rigid. The FAA responded by creating a system to grant exemptions to the rules for companies that show they can operate safely.

Dan Hargrove, Director of Aviation at Rocky Mountain College, says with the new rules for operating a commercial drone, you have to take a training course and pass it – which they offer at the college.

Hargrove tells KULR-8 someone did take a test on Monday to fly drones commercially and passed it.

Rocky Mountain College offers a minor in drones as they hope to educate leaders in the drone business that will help with legal, safety and privacy decisions.
