Rocky's Petrino Excited About Team's Opening Defense

Posted: Updated:

Saturday the Rocky Mountain football team kicked off it's 2016 campaign with a bang, and a 31-21 win over MSU Northern up in Havre.

The Bears rode the strength of their defense to yesterdays win, particularly in the secondary where Rocky snagged two passes away from Lights signal caller Jess Krahn. On the day three of the four touchdowns scored by Rocky were a direct result of turnovers caused by the defense.  And as the Bears set their sights on an improvement this fall after finishing 4-6 each of the past two seasons, it was definitely an encouraging sign for head coach Jason Petrino in his first win.

"Defensively it was good you know the one thing is we didn't have any dropped interceptions," said Petrino. "You're getting hands on balls and you catch them and you feel good about it. Guys had some vision and they were able to see it and able to make the play. And it was good to see our guys get some returns out of it and stuff like that. Yeah that was positive it was good to see guys be put in position to finish the play and make the play."

The Battlin' Bears now set their sights on a Big Sky opponent for the first time since the 90's as this Saturday they'll travel to the University of Northern Colorado to take on the the Bears at 1:30.
