Gov. Bullock announces public land expansion plans

Posted: Updated:
MONTANA -

Governor Bullock announced plans today to expand and protect public lands in Montana.

Bullock says one of the projects he is most excited about is asking the legislature to help create the "Montana Office of Outdoor Recreation."

He says public lands account for 64,000 jobs and$6 billion in spending per year.

Bullock says in the past, there have been pushes to transfer public lands to the state.

"Well at the end of the day that would mean that those would be sold off so I think that, and it's not whether you're democrat or republican, everyone views these lands as essential to our economy and kind of our birthright here" Bullock said. "So saying that any efforts to transfer public land out of public hands sure won't happen on my watch."

Some other plans include the creation of a "Public Access Specialist" position as well as asking the legislature to fully fund Habitat Montana.

If you have ideas about how to improve public land access, you can email keepitpublic@mt.gov.
