Your Health: Be Sun Smart

BILLINGS, Mont. -

If you're spending time outdoors, it's important to wear sunscreen with broad spectrum protection according to Billings Clinic Dermatologist Dr. Samuel Reck, MD.

He said it only takes ten minutes to get a sunburn which can cause skin cancer. "When you look at a sunscreen you want to make sure it's broad spectrum.  The higher the number the better.  The SPF number only covers ultraviolet B so you want to make sure it says broad spectrum so you get the A rays as well, both can cause the cancer.  And, then you want to use enough of it," Dr. Reck, MD said.  "It takes a teaspoon to cover your hands and your face and you've got to reapply every couple of hours because it gets sweated off and water washes it off."

Dr. Reck, MD recommends photo-protective clothing and using a wide brimmed hat which covers your ears.  He said warning signs for non melanoma skin cancers include new growths, a spot that is getting larger, and a visible sore that does not heal.  See your dermatologist if you have any spots or moles that are asymmetric, have irregular borders, multiple colors, larger than 6mm (pencil eraser), or are changing.

May is melanoma awareness month.
