RMC algae experiment on SpaceX Dragon to launch Friday

Posted: Updated:
BILLINGS, Mont. -

It's all about second chances in life and Rocky Mountain College is getting another shot at sending up an algae experiment to the International Space Station Friday.

The computer science students created the algae growth experiment but it didn't make it into space when the rocket launch failed in 2015.  The same project, with some improvements, will launch again on board the SpaceX Dragon Cargo Spacecraft Friday.

"It's just amazing where we've come with this project.  It's just great that we get to travel and see something new and experience something different," Ayla Grandpre said.  She and two other students will watch the launch in Cape Canaveral.  "This project provides a way that we can hopefully start converting carbon dioxide into oxygen.  And, that will mean it's a lot cheaper to do space flights because they don't have to haul that extra oxygen up to the space station," Dr. Andy Wildenberg said.  Dr. Wildenberg said this is an opportunity of a lifetime for the students and Rocky Mountain College.  If all goes as expected and there's a successful launch, the students will be able to start seeing pictures from the ISS within one week.
