Gianforte picks Phillips County commissioner as running mate

Posted: Updated:

EAST HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Republican Greg Gianforte has chosen a Phillips County commissioner as his running mate in his bid for Montana governor.

The Bozeman businessman picked Commissioner Lesley Robinson, a rancher from the Dodson area. Robinson is a former president of the Western Interstate Region of the National Association of Counties.

Democrats were scurrying Monday morning to learn more about Robinson, who is little known outside the farming communities.

Gianforte and Robinson will challenge Gov. Steve Bullock, who is seeking re-election.

The Democrat won election in 2012 with John Walsh, who Bullock later appointed to the U.S. Senate when former Sen. Max Baucus retired.

Bullock's second lieutenant governor, Angela McClean, stepped down late last year after an apparent falling out with the governor. He later picked Mike Cooney to fill the post.
