Gianforte officially launches campaign for Montana governor

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Bozeman Republican Greg Gianforte has announced his candidacy for governor, ending months of speculation as he explored running for his first political office.

Gianforte made the announcement on his website Wednesday before speaking at a campaign event in Billings.

Gianforte is widely considered the favorite to represent the GOP against Gov. Steve Bullock, a Democrat who is seeking a second term.

He hopes to become the first Republican governor of Montana since Judy Martz, a one-term governor, left office in 2005.

Gianforte made millions of dollars in the technology industry and has already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars since launching an exploratory campaign last year.

He plans to travel to Sidney, Lewiston and Kalispell on Wednesday, followed by Great Falls, Helena, Missoula and Bozeman on Thursday.
